The modern instrumental investigative method, called bioimpedansometry, helps to avoid multiple troubles and risks.
So much baseless tears are flowing, when after a week of exhaustive training the bathroom scales show not desired weight loss, but an unexpected weight gain! Needless to say, how dangerous can be the way of the athletes-beginners if they do not monitor the body fluid balance. Bioimpedansometry is used in a wide range of different areas in health-improvement, wellness and fitness. It allows to identify the risks of disorder occurrence, the cause of overweight, determine the physiological age of the person, detect metabolic disorders.
Bioimpedance analyzer estimates the average fat, muscle, bone and water content in the human body. This method is essential for the development of the individual excess weight reduction program. The cause of overweight is not always easy to identify. The calculation of body mass index (BMI), traditionally used for that purpose, can give a rough estimate only. The weight gain can be related not only to an accumulation of adipose tissue. The active muscle gain during the training process or fluid retention (edema) can also cause excess weight. The muscle gain due to increasing physical activity is that cause of the weight gain during first several days or weeks of excess weight reduction program. The bathroom scales are not sensitive enough to distinguish, but the bioimpedance analyzer can determine the cause easy and report when things go right.
How the method works
It is known that different tissues of the body have different resistance. The bioimpedance analyzer measures this resistance, when weak alternate current passes through the human body, determining fat, muscle and water content.
Accurate and painless procedure does not require the participation of a qualified health professional. Measurements last no more than one minute. With use of the explanatory figures the sensors are placed on the body and the software is run. The software performs the analysis automatically. Upon completing the assessment, the software draws a conclusion with measurement results by means of visual images and written characters, as well as recommendations for nutrition and physical activity level.
What it is used for
The bioimpedance analyzer assesses multiple significant parameters with continuous control during the health-improving, excess weight reduction or training program. It signals the possible troubles and risks, points to mistakes, enabling to correct them fast, and therefore it helps to develop individual and effective program with the regular monitoring of results.
In particular, if the body water content increases, it means there are latent or distinct oedemata. They occur in cardiac or kidney diseases. At the other extreme is a dramatic decline in body fluid volume, especially extracellular water (blood and lymph). Such state is provoked by active physical activity without consumption of sufficient amount of water. This leads to the weight loss, but it is not a reason for joy. Water deficiency causes blood thickening. It increase the probability of development of blood clots, and therefore, venous thrombosis, stroke or heart attack even at a young age. That’s why it is necessary to monitor the body fluid content by means of the bioimpedance analyzer and increase consumption of water in a case of deficiency detected.
Overweight and athletic training
Bioimpedansometry also enables to assess fat content and amount of so-called active cell mass (ACM; it is mainly the skeletal muscle tissue). The monitoring of these parameters is essential both for the athletes and persons involved in the excess weight reduction program. For example, if the cause of weight gain of the athlete is not increasing muscle volume, but fat mass, it is necessary to adjust the nutrition and reduce its caloric value.
The muscle tissue increase is also necessary during the excess weight reduction process. No one needs to be concerned that active physical activity can cause too aerobicised body. The point is the muscle burns more calories than fat and other tissues. Muscle mass deficiency leads to accumulation of the fat, even in case of energy restricted diet. The excess weight reduction program is considered effective if amount of fat decreases and amount of the active cell mass increases a little. If amount of ACM decreases, it means that muscle proteins burn. The protein-free diets can cause such state. The body weight reduces, but functions of internal organs deteriorate. That is why it is essential to monitor this parameter.
Determination of the basal metabolic rate helps to create the optimal diet regimen. It is the number of calories required to keep the body functioning at rest. The lower a basal metabolic rate, the weight reduction process is longer, because calories burn slowly. This parameter allows to calculate the number of calories needed for a particular person. Besides, it motivates to continue working on the excess weight reduction program. Even a basal metabolic rate is low, the results will definitely be apparent, but a little later.
How the procedure is performed
Connect Bioscanner Wellness to a laptop or a computer via USB port. Accumulator or batteries are not required for operation of Bioscanner. An electric shock hazard is excluded, because the device is supplied from the computer. The device can be used anywhere if there is a possibility to connect Bioscanner to a laptop.
The examination should be conducted when a person is in his/her seating or lying position. There is no discomfort during the procedure. To perform an examination it is necessary to place electrodes on the legs and the arms. The corresponding skin areas should be wiped with alcohol solution 70 %. Electrodes on the limbs should be placed strictly upon instruction. Electrode location must be in accordance to explanatory figures. It is necessary to provide close contact between entire surface of electrodes and patient’s skin. A poor contact leads to distortion of the data results or absence of data. It is necessary to moisten the contacts of electrodes with saline solution 9 % (to prepare it, you should dissolve a whole teaspoon of salt in 100 ml of cooled boiled water). Measurement takes no more then 15 seconds. The person should stay still during the procedure.
After measurements the data from the electrodes go to the computer for software processing.
Conducting of bioimpedansometry is not recommended when a person has a heart pacemaker, skin damage and/or skin disease in places of contact between electrodes and skin or during pregnancy. Besides, it is not advisable to perform the procedure if the body temperature is high or during menses.
To provide the accuracy of measurements, it is necessary one week before the examination to discontinue diuretic drugs and two days before the procedure a person should avoid of tea, coffee or alcoholic drinks. A person should not eat or drink at least 3 hours before the procedure. Besides, a half-hour before the examination the urinary bladder should be emptied.
A person must not have jewelry on the body, including piercing jewelry. All electronic devices should be turned off. It is advisable to wear loose clothing made of cotton. Before the examination, especially when a person comes from outdoor into a room, it is necessary to lie down for 7–10 minutes to get acclimatized.
